PBS CEO Writes Open Letter To Supporters

Dear Friend and Supporter,

In the next few days, Congress will vote on legislation to eliminate all funding for public television and radio. This is a very serious matter.

Federal funding equals more than 14% of the annual budget for PBS SoCal. Because we operate in such an efficient manner, with no pad or financial cushion, the dollars we receive from Congress each year are critical to our very survival. That is the case with many PBS stations across the country.

At PBS, our job is to preserve much that is endangered in our society. PBS stations provide journalism you can trust, cost-effective educational support to millions of students and teachers, children ready to learn when they enter school, and art and culture available in our homes - all for about $1 per American each year.

It is the annual appropriation from congress, leveraged with support from our members, that allows PBS to be the only television entity that treats viewers as citizens in a democracy rather than consumers in a marketplace. If you value public broadcasting, we need your help more than ever before.

Congress will vote on these cuts in the next few days, so please act now.

  • Call your Members of Congress to tell them what you think of public broadcasting and the proposed cuts. Due to the urgency of this situation, phone calls are the most effective way to make sure that your voice is heard. Contact information is listed below.

  • Join others who value public broadcasting at 170millionamericans.org where you can sign up to receive updates on how to take further action and send an email to your representative.

  • Visit pbssocal.org to learn more about this critical time for public broadcasting.

  • Spread the word – Help us raise awareness by encouraging everyone you know to raise their voice for public broadcasting. This can be done through social media, word of mouth and by sharing this email with family and friends.

Thank you for rising to the occasion and for exercising your rights as a citizen to influence the future of our nation.

Sincerely,

Mel Rogers
President and CEO
