Thai Airways Helps Cyclone Nargis Survivors in Myanmar and Sends Earthquake Relief Goods to Chengdu, China

THAI's President, Flg. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni, stated "the company has provided assistance since May 5, 2008, and plans to continue providing help through the transportation of relief food and food supplies to the devastated regions."

On May 3, 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit the Union of Myanmar, which resulted in temporary suspension of the company's flights to Yangon on May 3-4. As a result of the tornado, electricity went out and the country of Myanmar experienced substantial damage and losses. THAI began the relief support the first day flights were allowed to return to the region. Since then, the airline has donated 90,000 relief good items and transported them to the Union of Myanmar, including items like blankets, plates, dishes, spoons, and cups, dry foods, water, medicine and clothes. Also THAI has provided assistance to its 90 employees based in Yangon since the first day that the natural disaster struck.

The company was able to eventually resumed normal flight operations with two return flights on the Bangkok-Yangon route per day.

Furthermore, THAI also provided emergency humanitarian assistance to Chengdu, located in the southwestern Sichuan province in the People's Republic of China, following the earthquake on a scale of 7.8 Richter that took place on May 12, 2008 in a location near to Chengdu. THAI assisted in transporting relief goods on the company's flights to Chengdu.
