Safak Pavey of Turkey interview

First Lady Michelle Obama, Safak Pavey of Turkey and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the 2012 International Women of Courage Awards in Washington, DC. Pavey, one of the honorees, is a journalist, writer and politician. She is a member of the Parliament representing Istanbul. She is the first Turkish member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In 1996, Pavey lost her left arm and left leg in a train accident in Switzerland. She and her mother wrote the book 13 Numaral¦ Peron (Platform No. 13) narrating the train accident in Zurich, which became a best-seller in Turkey.

Pavey served in the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees responsible for foreign relations and humanitarian aid in countires such as Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Hungary and she served in Afghanistan and other conflict regions as a solution activist.
